About the National AIDS Council

The National Parliament through an act of Parliament set up the National AIDS Council and its Secretariat to facilitate a comprehensive multi-sector response to HIV and AIDS in the country.

Its membership comprises 17 government departments, representatives of the private sector through the Chamber of Commerce, the Church sector, non-government sector, the Council of Women, Department of Justice and Attorney General, Department of Finance and Person Living with HIV and AIDS.

Our objectives

As the main advocate for national action on HIV and AIDS, the National AIDS Council and its Secretariat, are responsible for the formulation, review and revision of national policy for the prevention, control and management of HIV and AIDS and for monitoring and coordinating the implementation of the National Strategic Plan.

NAC and its Secretariat are responsible to elicit, support, encourage and promote the involvement of a broad range of actions in HIV and AIDS activities. NACS takes a lead role in mobilizing resources to support implementation.

Vision:

To contribute towards a healthy, independent, secure and prosperous Papua New Guinea.

Objectives of the Council:

  • Facilitate a multi-sector response to minimize the transmission of HIV and AIDS to prevent, control and toe eliminate transmission of HIV and AIDS in PNG.  
  • Organise a mechanism to minimize personal, social and economic impact of HIV and AIDS in PNG, and
  • Ensure personal privacy, dignity and integrity is maintained in the face of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in the PNG.
